In 1968, Richard Larry Brown worked as an auto mechanic at a Buick dealership in Augusta, GA. Living a life that consisted of working, partying, alcoholism, and a rocky marriage, he had no idea what God had in store. One Friday a co-worker approached him, and said these words...
"Did you know that, 'the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words.' You have a good weekend!"
Of course, the young Larry Brown was confused and bothered! What did that mean? Later that evening, he and his wife, Diane, did what they normally did on Friday night: Partied, drank, and tried to drown any problems in beer, strobe lights, and "fun." This time, however, it was different. All weekend, Larry heard that voice in his ear saying, "The Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout..." He couldn't shake the convicting power of the Holy Spirit! That Sunday morning, slightly hung-over from the night before, he and Diane did something they had never done together: Went to church.
After a strong message from John 3:3, the couple returned home, fighting the wooing of God's love. All afternoon, they wrestled with God and decided, "Let's go back tonight." That is where EVERYTHING changed! That "third Sunday night in September, nineteen-hundred and sixty-eight," Larry and Diane Brown gave their lives to Jesus Christ! Sixty-one days later, Larry answered God's call to preach! God took two lives headed nowhere, cleaned them up, and gave a new purpose!
Our pastor, Dr. R. Larry Brown started Victory Baptist Church in 1975 in his living room with just a handful of people. For over forty years, through growth, hurts, church expansion, building programs, and more, he has remained faithful to the calling God has placed upon his life. Whether traveling across the country to preach in a conference of revival, or standing to preach at Victory on a Sunday morning, he has given his all to God's people and God's ministry. His dynamic, evangelistic preaching style and his gift of loving people, has made him not just a preacher or pastor. Dr. R. Larry Brown is a friend and shepherd to the people of Victory Baptist Church.
